The EPGE Brazilian School of Economics and Finance (FGV EPGE) is holding the seminar “Perspectives on the Brazilian Pension Reform” on Wednesday, September 30, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.. The meeting is part of the Contemporary Themes series and will be held at the FGV Cultural Center in Rio de Janeiro, moderated by Professor Rubens Penha Cysne, dean of FGV EPGE.

The debate will bring together Paulo Tafner, economist and CEO of the Institute for Mobility and Social Development (Imds); Rogério Nagamine Costanzi, specialist in Public Policy and Government Management of the Federal Government and researcher at the Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea); and Carlos Eugênio Ellery, professor at FGV EPGE. The participants have academic and professional experience in the areas of Social Security, social policies, economics, and fiscal sustainability.

The discussion will address the current and future challenges of the Brazilian pension system, considering the country’s demographic transformations, the financing of Social Security, the evolution of pension expenses, and alternatives to guarantee the long-term sustainability of the system.

The theme gains relevance given the aging process of the Brazilian population and changes in the structure of the labor market, which impose new challenges on the design and financing of Social Security. The meeting will also allow for a discussion on the progress made with previous reforms, issues that remain open, and possible alternatives for the coming years.

The initiative seeks to bring students and the public closer to different perspectives on the economic, social, and institutional aspects related to the future of the Brazilian Pension System. The Contemporary Themes series promotes debates on relevant issues of the country’s economic and institutional agenda, bridging academic education and the topics under discussion in society.

The seminar continues FGV EPGE’s tradition of promoting discussions on the Brazilian Pension System. Previous initiatives include the meetings “Pension Reform: An Opportunity for Brazil,” held in 2016, and “Pension Reform: Analysis of PEC 287/2016,” held in 2017. On that occasion, Paulo Tafner and Rogério Nagamine Costanzi participated together in the panel dedicated to the technical aspects of the reform.

Also in 2017, FGV EPGE promoted, in partnership with the World Bank, the seminar “Social Security: The Challenges of the New Demographic Regime,” dedicated to the implications of population aging for the Brazilian pension system. In 2019, the theme returned to the School’s agenda in a meeting of the Contemporary Themes course dedicated to discussing the pension reform.
