“Will my pension be enough?” “How much do I have to save?” “ How long will it have to last?”

These are the fundamental questions behind one of the most complicated math problems individuals will ever attempt to solve and not one of the variables is defined.
Nobody knows how long they’re going to live. Nobody knows how much things will cost. Nobody knows what
health, economic, or environmental disruptions they’ll face along the way.
Lacking the data for a precise answer, individuals have put their faith in a three-pillar model for retirement income: government pensions, employer retirement plans, and personal savings. But this model that’s served individuals since the end of World War II is under intense pressure.
A rapidly aging population means there are more people taking money out of public retirement systems and fewer paying in.
Expanding life expectancies means private pensions face greater funding liabilities. Record levels of public debt could stress public pensions in the same way. And an inflationary environment means individuals have less money to save.
Faced with these realities, individuals recognize that something in the 80-year-old model has to give—and most know it will likely be them.
